High school is the time to make some decisions about your career aspirations; however, without guidance, this journey can be incredibly confusing. One way to make these decisions easier is to participate in conferences; if you are interested in the medical fields, you can attend an important conference and also earn Congress of Future Medical Leaders College Credit.

Entering the Medical Field

Health care – both as a provider and a researcher – is a dynamic field covering a variety of interests. But, for many young people, entering the medical field may seem like a daunting task; especially if the student does not have any role models or mentors to help with the journey. Additionally, reports note that many current doctors are burned out and unhappy in medicine; this could discourage some students from pursuing their dream.

The 2013 National Survey of Future Medical Leaders Survey asked 6000 high school students who plan to pursue medical careers how they felt about their future. Results indicated that 93 percent of respondents noted that they are very, or somewhat, optimistic about the future of medicine. There are certainly reasons to be optimistic but it doesn’t make the journey easier. One stepping stone could be attending the 2014 Congress.

Attending the 2014 Congress

The 2014 Congress of Future Medical Leaders is an honors-only event that will be held February 14-16, 2014 for high school students who are interested in medicine or medical research. The Congress is sponsored by the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists and will be held in Washington, D.C. The aim is to inspire and educate these outstanding students about the medical field and to provide resources that will help them to achieve their goals. There will be lectures and workshops led by some of the brightest medical minds in the world. 

Students may also be able to find a mentor for a long-term relationship; mentors can offer advice or feedback each step of the way.

College Credit for Congress Attendance

In addition to the educational experience and the mentoring relationships that the participants will have access to while attending the Congress, there is another tangible benefit. The National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists is partnering with Washington Adventist University in offering 1 unit of transferable college credit for attendance at the Congress.

The student would have to successfully complete the Congress, receive the Academy’s Award of Excellence, apply for credit with the University, and write an essay about “My Vision for the Future of Medicine”. A fee for one college credit will also be due to the university before the start of the congress. This is an ideal opportunity to get a head start on college credits.
